Kentucky Information Highway (KIH)

What is the KIH?   

 

Kentucky's Information Highway is a statewide telecommunications and information network developed by Kentucky state government in partnership with the state's local telephone companies.This public-private partnership is laying the foundation for the Kentucky Information Highway.

 

The statewide network, with an "access ramp" in every one of Kentucky's 120 counties.

 

What services will I get if I connect to the KIH?

 

  • email and global address directory (additional software & licensing required)
  • Internet access
  • Acess to LAN based services such as desktop faxing
  • Mainframe access (requires the purchase of Attachmate 3270 package) including MARS
  • Access to other servers on the network (with the approval of the owner agency)
  • Attractive rates for voice (long distance) services

 

GOT provides connectivity

 

  • Installs router, CSU/DSU
  • Phone company installs data line at GOT's request and direction

 

What do I need before I can connect to the KIH?

 

Establish a Local Area Network

 

The customer or the Contract provider or must configure hardware/software to activate the KIH connection.

 

The IT Contracts and Partners page shows the various areas and vendors that are on the State Price Contract and available for use.

 

If you don't already have a Local Area Network in place contact the primary vendors from the Support Services Contracts. Included are the contract number and contact person for each vendor in the Network Computing Support area and a price chart for these four vendors. The contractors can can provide you with estimates and do an analysis to determine what you will need. The network contract providers can assist you in installing the necessary items such as wiring (category 6), hub(s), server, workstations, and NIC cards.

 

The required form, GOT F180, Procurement Request, for requesting to either connect to the KIH or to upgrade the current connection. The completed form must then be sent to GOT Network Planning & Administration, and will be accepted by email, fax (502-696-1899), or by mail: 101 Cold Harbor Dr., Frankfort KY 40601. Once the paperwork is received it usually takes about a month to complete the work order.
