Don Williams was commissioned from the University of Massachusetts ROTC program in 1960. He served in a progression of U.S. Army Armor, Infantry and staff assignments for 29 years. Mr. Williams received Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in Political Science from the University of Massachusetts. He taught in the Political Science Department of the U.S. Air Force Academy and spent five years at the Pentagon on the Army Staff and as Secretary to the Joints Chiefs of Staff.
After his retirement from the Army in July 1990 as Chief of Staff at Fort Knox, he served as Senior Vice President for Bank One, Central Kentucky, until October 1996. He now consults in the civil-military area and for Cypress International which represents several major defense corporations. Mr. Williams was instrumental in drafting the legislation and securing the funding for the Commission. As the Armor Center Chief of Staff he became actively involved in the community awareness of Fort Knox's programs and needs. As a member of the community, he is leading the efforts to protect and promote the future of Fort Knox at the local, state and federal levels through the CORE Committee of the Fort Knox chapter of the Association of the United States Army. Additionally, Mr. Williams was appointed by Governor Steve Beshear to serve as Chair of the Kentucky Commission on Military Affairs and Vice Chair of the Governor's Task Force on Military Base Realignment.
